  • Francisco DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES (1746-1828)1. Francisco Goya y Lucientes, pintor1. Francisco Goya y Lucientes, painterBorn in rural Aragón in 1746, Goya was exposed to the artistic world from an early age, as his father was a gilder. This would have allowed the young Goya to experience contact with the artistic and professional world first hand from a young age. After studying and working for a few years under Luzán in Zaragoza and Francisco Bayeu in Madrid, Goya enhanced his position at court and ingratiated himself with the wealthy and the powerful through numerous commissioned works.Aquatint and etching31 x 41 x 3 cm
  • Auguste RODIN (1840-1917)Pygmalion and GalateaThe subject of this bronze is taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses. When Vulcan sculpts the first woman, Pygmalion falls in love with the statue the god is creating and begs Aphrodite to transform it into a living woman. Bronze 42,1 x 27 x 31 cmCast in 2015 by Fonderie de Coubertin, ParisInscribed A. Rodin, © by Musée Rodin and numbered, one of the eight examples numbered in Arabic numerals, dated and stamped with foundry mark
  • Francisco DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES (1746-1828)26. Ya tienen asiento26. Now they are sitting wellThese nice girls have enough chairs, but they know nothing better to do with them than to wear them on their heads.61. Volavérunt 61. They have flownThe witches who serve as a pedestal to this fashion’s fool are more ornamental than useful. There are heads so swelled with hot air that they need neither broom nor witches to make them fly. 60. Ensayos60. TrialsGradually he makes progress. Now he can jump a little. In time he will do even as much as his teacher.75. ¿No hay quién nos desate?75. Will no one set us free? A man and a woman are tied together. They are trying with all their might to free themselves and are calling for help. If I’m not mistaken, they are two people who were forced to marry. Aquatint and etching31 x 41 x 3 cm
  • Auguste RODIN (1840-1917)MedeaThe theme of Medea, killing her children in a fit of jealousy and desperation after being abandoned by Jason whom she followed into exile, was popular among many artists in the 19th century. Through its pyramidal composition and the twist of Medea’s body, which seems to turn away from their children, Rodin’s group seems to particularly echo Delacroix’s painting (1838, Museum of Fine Arts in Lille). Médée is one of three works cast for the centenary of Rodin’s death.Bronze 63 x 33 x 32 cmCast in 2017 by Fonderie Susse, ParisInscribed ‘A. Rodin’, © by Musée Rodin and numbered Ed. 1/8, one of the eight examples in Arabic numerals, dated and stamped with foundry mark
  • Francisco DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES (1746-1828)46. Correción 46. CorrectionWithout punishment and self-discipline one can’t get on in any science. In witchcraft one needs unusual talent perseverance, maturity, and a rigid obedience to the teachings of the Great Witchmaster who conducts the Seminary of Barahona. 56. Subir y bajar56. Ups and downsFortune is unkind to those who court her. Ambition is rewarded with emptiness. Those who have risen she often punishes with downfall.77. Unos à otros77. Now one, now anotherThe way of the world. The people laugh and play bullfighting with each other. He who yesterday played the bull plays today the toreador. Chance rules the game and assigns the parts according to her caprices.Aquatint and etching31 x 41 x 3 cm
  • Auguste RODIN (1840-1917)The CreatorThis relief, portraying a spirit whispering ideas into the artist's ear, has always been viewed as a symbolic representation of Rodin. Placed within the right-hand jamb of La Porte de l’Enfer, at the very bottom, this relief has been viewed as a kind of signature, like those left by the master-craftsmen of the Middle Ages.Bronze 41 x 36,9 x 13,5 cmCast in 1984 by Fonderie de Coubertin, ParisInscribed ‘A. Rodin’, © by Musée Rodin and numbered Ed. 7/8, one of the eight examples in Arabic numerals, dated and stamped with foundry mark
  • Francisco DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES (1746-1828)33. Al Conde Palatino33. To the Count PalatineIn all science there are people who know everything without having learned and have a ready remedy for all ills. One can’t believe what they say. The really intelligent person mistrusts them. The educated person makes moderate promises and keeps much in reserve. The Count Palatine never keeps any promises at all.40. ¿De que mal morirà?40. Of what will he die?The doctor is doing his best. What more can we expect?30. ¿Por qué esconderlos?30. Why hide them? The answer is easy. He won’t spend it; he doesn’t spend it; he can’t spend it. Although he is over eighty and has barely another month to live, he is afraid that he might have no more left if he lives longer. Such are the mistakes of greed.13. Están Calientes13. It’s hotThey are so greedy that they gulp down their own soup boiling. In pleasure more than anything else temperance and wisdom are necessary. Aquatint and etching31 x 41 x 3 cm
  • Auguste RODIN (1840-1917)PunishmentThe work represents a man bent forward, carrying the body of a woman, surrounded by two female figures, who appear suspended in the air. The title “Punishment” would seem to indicate that they are representations of the Greek Erinyes; the role of these deities, known by the Romans as the Furies, was to persecute criminals.Châtiment is one of three works cast for the centenary of Rodin’s death.Bronze 40 x 30 x 15,5 cmCast in 2017 by Fonderie de Coubertin, ParisInscribed ‘A. • Francisco DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES (1746-1828)59. ¡Y aún no se van!59. And still they don't go!He who is indifferent to the favors of fortune sleeps calmly through all danger. Nevertheless, danger threatens him and he cannot avoid the misfortunes that will befall him.62. ¡Quién lo creyera!62. Who would believe it!See them fight as to which is the bigger witch. Who would have believed that they would tear each other to pieces in such an insane fashion? Friendship is a virtue. Criminals may be accomplices but never friends. 71. Si amanece; nos vamos71. When day breaks we will be offIf you didn't come, you won't have been missed.69. Sopla69. She blowsSurely, there was a great catch of children yesterday. The banquet being prepared will be a large one. Hearty appetite!Aquatint and etching31 x 41 x 3 cm
